TU Delft joins International Universities Climate Alliance
An International Universities Climate Alliance (‘Climate Alliance’) has been established this week to help communicate research insights on the most effective means to meet the global challenge of climate change. Over 40 universities from around the world joined forces and committed to collaborating for climate insight and action. TU Delft is one of the founding members.
University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) is facilitating the establishment of the Climate Alliance in its first year and has invited over 40 of the world’s leading climate research universities to join - and more are expected to follow. Alliance members are to work together to identify the most effective ways to communicate research-based facts related to climate change to the public. Members will engage in work across climate change science, impact, mitigation strategies and adaptation.
Climate Action
TU Delft Rector Magnificus/President Tim van der Hagen: ‘Our university attaches great importance to climate action. In this regard, we recently published a Climate Action vision paper on how we aim to harness our innovative powers to support the world-wide transition to non-fossil energy, and thus support the adaptation of the living environment to the consequences of global warming.’
Global approach
‘Membership of the Climate Alliance is important for TU Delft, since we feel that the debate on climate change will yield the most when it leads to conjoined efforts that take into account important societal values and ethical issues of responsibility and justice. A coordinated, more global approach like the Climate Alliance is something we therefore wholeheartedly support.’
Greater collaboration
Membership comprises a global network of universities, united by their dedication to producing critical climate research. The Climate Alliance, benefitting from a multi-disciplinary research focus, will provide a central hub for universities to share the latest climate research with the public and enable greater collaboration between leading research teams, supporting global leaders, policy makers and industry in planning for and responding to climate change.
