NWO awards a project to Marjan Popov in the 2020 open NWO-TTW program
The project “Protection of Future Power System Crucial Components (PRoteuS)” of Marjan Popov is one of the six projects which has been awarded by NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences within the Open Technology Programme (OTP).
The project is in the scope of the research program of the Power System Protection Centre (PSPC), led by Marjan Popov and is also supported by TSO TenneT, Alliander, Smit Transformers and TSO National Grid (United Kingdom). The amount of 860 kEuro will be used for 5-year research to investigate mysterious failures in future electrical power systems and to find solutions how to avoid them.
Future power systems are frequently exposed to switching and lighting effects, which may result in severe overvoltages from different origin. This project is aimed at developing new simulation techniques based on electromagnetic field theory, and finding solutions for so far, yet unresolved questions related to mysterious failures of power equipment. Comprehensive analyses will be performed by taking into account grounding effects of the substations.
Based on the developed techniques, procedures to investigate the equipment failures will be defined and a low-cost protection device will be developed.
