“On-chip silicon Mach–Zehnder interferometer sensor for ultrasound detection”
This experimental work on a novel ultrasound sensor is the result of a collaboration of members of three ImPhys sections and a partner of Ghent University.
In the Letter we report an integrated photonics Mach-Zehnder interferometer for ultrasound detection, fabricated in silicon-on-insulator technology. The sensor signal results from strain modulation of the sensing spiral of the interferometer in response to applied ultrasound. Among the sensor properties are: high sensitivity, small noise equivalent pressure, high dynamic range and sensitivity linear in optical input power.
