Anton Akhmerov joins The Young Academy
The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) has selected Dr. Anton Akhmerov from the department of Quantum Nanoscience as a new member of The Young Academy. He is one of ten new members, all of whom have a broad interest in science practice, science policy and science communication.
Anton Akhmerov (1984) conducts research into quantum mechanical systems and nano-superconductors using computer simulations. He is also interested in open source software and open data. He developed a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) and has taught thousands of people about topology in quantum mechanics. Akhmerov also developed 'Zesje', software to efficiently and systematically correct exams. For Zesje, he received the Delft Educational Fellowship 2018. Akhmerov is a member of the editorial board of the open access journal New Journal of Physics. Through The Young Academy he wants to contribute to policy changes for science, particularly in the field of open science.
"Open science is a solution to various problems within the academic community and is also a great opportunity for improvement", says Akhemerov. "However, introducing this new method is very difficult because of the enormous inertia in the academic community. As a member of The Young Academy, I want to contribute to the promotion of open science and accelerate its arrival.”
Membership of The Young Academy lasts five years. The official installation of the new members will take place on 21 March 2019.
