BK alumna Alessandra Covini wins Prix de Rome 2018
Architect and BK alumna Alessandra Covini received the Prix de Rome 2018 for her project Amsterdam Allegories. Her proposal for the Sixhaven area in North Amsterdam turns the area into a walled harbour in which twenty-one islands provide space for passing visitors.
The proposal Amsterdam Allegories responds to the fictional assignment by the jury, to come up with a meaningful and non-consumptive programme for the Sixhaven area. Designs had to be significant for the city, creating an area that could be cherished by many. The plan by Covini sketches scenarios in which the 21 islands drift around the city. Every island refers to specific characteristics and typologies found within both the city and the harbour of Rotterdam. The enclosed islands in the walled harbour become a new typology themselves. The jury mentioned how the result is refreshing plan, proposing new forms of public space that sparkle with pleasure, positive energy, and humour.
Alessandra Covini graduated from BK Bouwkunde TU Delft in 2014, and founded Studio Ossidiana in 2015. The Prix de Rome award she received in recognition of her work comes with a € 40.000,- prize and a work period at the American Academy in Rome. The Prix de Rome Architecture is awarded once every four years to talented young architects, urban designers, or landscape architects. The other nominees for this year’s Prix de Rome were Bram van Kaathoven, Katarzyna Nowak, and the duo Rademacher de Vries.
