Design of High-speed Railway Passenger Service Plan from a Multi-modal Transport Perspective

Subject

High-speed Railway passenger service plan includes both line plan and timetable.  Line planning is the initial process in the strategic level of railway management,  and it aims to find a set of lines or paths in the network with corresponding stop schemes and operation frequencies that satisfies travel demand in a given network. Timetabling is the crucial part in operational level with respect to departure times, passing times and arrive times of lines  in each station.  This research  aims to develop models for both processes with consideration of cyclic and acyclic pattern. The stability and robustness of timetable would be evaluated  as a feedback loop to line planning step.  And the  timetable synchronization with public transport is proposed to provide a seamless connection to passengers.

Scientific challenges

The main challenge for this research is how to develop models which integrate cyclic and acyclic pattern in line planning and timetabling process in order to provide a stable and robust service plan to high-speed railways. In addition, the synchronization of passenger transfer in timetable between high-speed railway and public transport is difficult due to the complexity of timetables.

Societal relevance

In recent years, high-speed railways are developing rapidly in the world.  This research focuses on optimizing a service plan to satisfy the growing passenger transportation demands and improve the service quality in high-speed railway system. Meanwhile, for an integrated trip chain between high-speed railway and public transport, a seamless connection is designed to reduce passenger’s waiting time and enhance the efficiency of transport system.
