Tessel is a supramolecular chemist working in the field of artificial photosynthesis. She uses nature as a source of inspiration to achieve the conversion of simple building blocks into complex chemicals driven by sunlight. Her supramolecular approach entails the application of non-covalent chemistry to solve challenges encountered in artificial photosynthesis. She established the ring-launching solar cell, combining supramolecular machines in dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells, increasing the power conversion efficiency of these devices. Currently, she develops new methods using a supramolecular approach to generate solar chemicals, to replace the need for polluting fossil resources. This research includes synthesis of materials, electrode preparation, electrochemical characterization and mechanistic studies using different spectroscopic methods.

Academic background

Tessel obtained her bachelor (2014) and master degree (2016) from the University of Amsterdam (UvA). She was awarded with her own PhD fellowship with her appointment within the ‘Holland Research School of Molecular Chemistry’ (HRSMC) and graduated in 2021 under supervision of Prof. Dr. Joost Reek and Dr. Simon Mathew. She did a short postdoc in the group of Dr. Grecea (UvA), before she was awarded an NWO Rubicon Postdoctoral Fellowship to work in the Reisner Lab at the University of Cambridge, UK (2022–2024). Furthermore, she was elected as a Research Fellow of Darwin College in 2023. In 2024, Tessel received an NWO Veni grant, and now she works as an assistant professor at TU Delft on supramolecular approaches in artificial photosynthesis.
