Duurzame kunstmatige intelligentie: van ChatGPT naar groene AI

A decade ago, Luís Cruz worked on developing software tools to bring artificial intelligence (AI) to smartphones. It quickly triggered the question of energy efficiency. Not with the noble goal of making them more sustainable but to prevent them from draining the battery too quickly. Cruz went searching for tools and knowledge, but encountered an empty field. “It made me realize there was a need for research,” he says. Soon thereafter he started his PhD research project on ‘green software’, starting simple by studying the energy efficiency of basic mobile apps. As an assistant professor at TU Delft, Cruz remains passionate about sustainable software, specifically AI.

Roboats in Amsterdam

Over een paar jaar varen waarschijnlijk overal autonome bootjes door de Amsterdamse grachten. Deze Roboats zijn inzetbaar voor tal van toepassingen: van het ophalen van het huisvuil tot de inspectie van kademuren. De Roboat wordt ontwikkeld door het Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute), dat mede is opgericht door de TU Delft.

Klinkt goed: ultrageluid tegen depressie

Tiago Costa werkt aan een nieuwe, gerichte neuromodulatie behandeling voor depressie, op basis van gefocust ultrageluid. Zo kan hij precies het deel van de hersenen behandelen dat aandacht nodig heeft, terwijl de rest met rust wordt gelaten.

Voelen zonder iets aan te raken

Vraag je je af hoe de stof van de trui voelt die je online wil bestellen? Of wil je de hand van je familielid die ver weg woont door je computerscherm heen aanraken? Universitair docent Yasemin Vardar snapt je volledig. Video en audio zijn al jaren als digitale pakketjes te versturen en ontvangen. Voor ‘aanraken’ geldt dat niet. In 2020 richtte ze het Haptic Interface Technology Lab op om hier verandering in te brengen.

Biologie inspireert nieuw robotbrein

De biologie is een onuitputtelijk inspiratiebron voor de robotica. Of het nu gaat om lopen, grijpen, vliegen of zwemmen, robotici kijken vol verbazing en interesse naar de rijke variatie aan oplossingen die de evolutie heeft ontwikkeld. Niet dat robotici de natuur klakkeloos kopiëren, maar wel dat ze eruit halen wat ze kunnen gebruiken in hun mechanische robots. Een efficiënte manier om een robothand een delicate paprika te laten vastpakken bijvoorbeeld. Of een energiezuinige manier om een robot op twee benen te laten lopen.

Op naar sociaal vaardige spraakrobots

De huidige spraakrobot ontbeert een belangrijke vaardigheid die wij mensen van nature hebben; het vermogen om precies te begrijpen hóe iets gezegd wordt en daar onze eigen spraak op aan te passen. Catherine Oertel van de Interactive Intelligence-groep ontwikkelt conversationele kunstmatige intelligentie die sociaal vaardig is.

Feminist AI: transforming and challenging the current Artificial Intelligence (AI) Industry

As a discipline and as a practice, data science has traditionally been led by a narrow cohort of people, representing a homogeneous demographic. This lack of diversity has contributed to the (often unconscious) perpetration of biases and stereotypes, which pose significant risks to society. Increasing diversity in data science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) not only mitigates these risks, but also fosters creativity and produces better outcomes.

Feminist AI offers a new perspective on the AI industry by challenging the notion that AI design, development, and deployment should be guided by – and should mainly benefit, a limited group of individuals, predominantly from Western male backgrounds. Sara Colombo, who leads the Feminist Generative AI Lab at TU Delft, advocates for other voices in data science and AI. “Only by making other voices heard can we ensure a more fair and equitable development of data science and AI, and the products and services that are built on them.”

For Marjan Popov it is clear: our society is at a crossroads. “We are undertaking perhaps the biggest engineering challenge of our time – we are radically changing the electricity grids.” According to him, the complexity of the electricity grids is comparable to the human body. “Similar to how patients are treated, we should always monitor, control, and protect the electricity grids."
