Extreme Materials & Mechanics (X2M)

Extreme Materials & Mechanics” research group led by Dr. Vera Popovich aims to use advanced manufacturing, novel experimental and analytical methods to explore existing and new materials, covering many length and time scales.

Our mission is to gain fundamental knowledge of failure micromechanisms in materials under extreme conditions (loading, temperature and environment) and develop advanced materials for such applications, while promoting education and best practices in failure control, advanced (correlative) characterization and manufacturing for the socio-economic benefit of society.

The group consists of the state-of-the-art mechanical behaviour laboratory and advanced manufacturing research infrastructure including top-notch fracture and fatigue equipment for extreme conditions, additive manufacturing and post-processing (thermal and surface) equipment and a group of research and scientific members.
