Steven Flipse

Background 

Steven Flipse is Assistant Professor in Collaboration Design for Innovation at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, with a background in engineering. Early on in his career, Steven realized that what he found truly interesting is the social dimension of technology. Having come to this realization, Steven pursued a PhD on the topic of transdisciplinary collaboration between experts from the social and natural sciences. 

Towards IDEE 

When Steven heard about the IDEE theme Future Engineering Skills, he saw a strong connection between his own research interests and teaching activities and the IDEE project. The focus of Steven’s own education is on teaching students what are considered to be 21st century skills such as teamwork, ethics, innovation management and life-long learning. With IDEE, Steven wants to share his expertise in the field of transdisciplinary collaboration as well as his experiences as a teacher of 21st century skills. 

As part of IDEE 

“Perhaps one of the biggest difficulties in collaborations between scientists of different disciplines, but also between scientists and people without a scientific background, is that they do not speak each other’s ‘languages’. Given my background in both the natural and social sciences, I see what happens in the lab and then place it within the social context within which it may be used. This is definitely something that I bring to the IDEE table.”
