My role as an educator is to trigger curiosity, and to support students as they explore new territory and determine their own goals. With IDEE, I can work on a topic that is really important to me, in a diverse team of colleagues. I really like working with and learning from others in this way. It gives me energy and is sure to benefit my own education and could be of great value as well for my other colleagues at my department.
Background
Serdar Așut is a lecturer at the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, with a special interest in the use of digital technologies and robotics in architecture education. Serdar has always had a special interest in architecture education and, as he likes to put it, loves tinkering with new methods and tools in his own education. Over the past few years, Serdar has worked on quite a number of education projects including such things as the use of VR in hybrid learning environments, the development of what Serdar refers to as “non-linear, divergent tutorials”, and the design of an interdisciplinary and -faculty 15 EC MSc course.
Towards IDEE
The common denominator of Serdar’s educational efforts is his focus on student-centered learning, or education that places great emphasis on addressing the diverse and distinct needs of students. Which is why, when Serdar saw the call for the IDEE theme Students taking responsibility for their own learning process, the IDEE project formed a beautiful fit with what he is already doing. “I see IDEE as an opportunity to examine whether the innovations that I have implemented in my own education are good innovations, whether they actually work, and I would love to share what I have been doing with colleagues and receive feedback from them.”
