The Professor of Excellence / Leermeester 2023: “Students energise me every day”
July 3rd was an exciting day for prof. dr. ir. Just Herder, professor Interactive Mechanisms and Mechatronics, as he was officially named “TU Delft Professor of Excellence / Leermeester 2023”.
The prestigious award recognises exceptional Professors at TU Delft who excel in both their research and education, and rewards them with a €15.000 prize to spend on a sabbatical.
I’m incredibly proud of Just for truly elevating the quality of education our Faculty offers

Just’s nomination and subsequent win comes as no surprise to his colleagues. “It’s absolutely deserved, he’s incredibly involved and engaged in both his research and education. You can tell that he’s passionate about it, and I’m incredibly proud of Just for truly elevating the quality of education our Faculty offers,” dean Fred van Keulen added.
PhD candidates and students agree wholeheartedly, emphasising that they feel lucky to have Just as their educator. “He’s incredibly empathetic, and it’s an absolute pleasure to work with him. He’s not just interested in how you are progressing professionally, but he also truly cares about you on a personal level. I know his schedule’s busy, but he will always make time if you need it. Not just 15 minutes, but an hour.”
That dedication is something born out of Just’s own passion for teaching and guiding others. Just doesn’t just state that “Students energise me every day”, he lives it. As a visionary scientist, he possesses the skills to also translate complex concepts to other contexts – whether it’s a room full of colleagues, companies, students or children.
4th September, Just will officially be presented with the award during a ceremony preceding the opening of the Academic Year. Aside from the cheque, he will also receive a Certificate, Silver Medal and two business class tickets provided by KLM.
