Dr. E. (Eleonora) Papadimitriou
Profile
Biography
Eleonora Papadimitriou is Assistant Professor with the Safety and Security Science Section of the Faculty of Technology, Policy, and Management. She holds a Civil / Transportation Engineering diploma from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA, 2001), a MSc in Transport from the Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (2003) and a PhD (2010) in Transport Safety from NTUA.
Expertise
Eleonora's research is on safety and accident risks of all transport modes (road, maritime, rail, aviation), with emphasis on the complex interaction between user, vehicle, technology and environment. She uses quantitative methods and AI applications for identifying and managing transport risks and their uncertainties. Her research aims to build bridges between engineering and human factors in transport safety, taking into account the value dimension and the ethical issues involved.
Eleonora is teaching the MSc course Transport Safety at TPM, and the BSc course Ethics & Safety in Maritime at 3ME.
Projects
Eleonora has been involved in more than 25 research projects in the field of transport safety, including several multidisciplinary international projects of the European Commission, the OECD/ITF, WHO, UNECE etc. Current projects:
- iDreams - Safety tolerance zone calculation and interventions for driver-vehicle-environment interactions under challenging conditions (Horizon 2020)
- Rhapsody - Recognition of human patterns of optimal driving for safety of conventional and autonomous vehicles (Horizon 2020 Marie-Curie programme)
- GAZETOAV - Gaze behaviour of road users when interacting with automated vehicles (seed funding of TU Delft Safety & Security Institute)
- PHOEBE - Predictive safety assessment for urban environments (Horizon Europe, starting November 2022)
