3. Electives

About

Electives are in the MSC TIL programme, because
- You can tailor the programme to your own needs;
- They support its interdisciplinary character.

Choosing Electives

Depending on your choice of Specialisation, you need 19-21 EC to arrive at the required 120 EC.

Internships
A stand alone internship is also an elective: Options are CIEM0120 and TPM593A.

First to arrange is the administration; contact the internship office.

Second to arrange is the content. You have to contact a MSc TIL lecturer who is willing and able to supervise and assess you. She or he should agree with the proposed content. You stay in regular contact with this supervisor, next to the external supervisor. Joint (on-line) meetings are advised.

Arrange both before you embark on your journey. Fixing things after you have started and are out of reach is not allowed. You will not receive the EC for a non-approved internship.

Combined internship/thesis projects
These are regulated by MSc TIL. The  internship office offers no support. Use the information contained in the Graduation portal of this website to prepare your project.

Rules

Article 6.1 of the TER MSc TIL 2024-2025 states that you should in principal choose elective courses mentioned in list of courses contained in Articles 6.2-6.4, but no courses mentioned in Article 6.5. Article 6.6 mentions extracirricular courses. Any other course, either in the Netherlands or abroad, needs prior approval by the Programme Coordinator, dr. Stefano Fazi.

Choosing your Electives is best done after carefully studying Article 6 of the TER MSc TIL, the study guide and possibly contacting the responsible instructor(s). The rules have been relaxed and aligned with the Board of Examiners, which restricts the space to deviate from them.

Pose your questions to dr. Stefano Fazi to prevent incorrect choices, which usually delay your study, in particular (the start of) your thesis project.

Relation with TIL5060 (thesis) project
Article 10.1 of the TER MSc TIL 2024-2025 allows a thesis project start while lacking at most 10 EC (5 EC from your Specialisation and 5 EC from your Electives). This will be checked by the Board of Examiners using My Study Planning and having received your completed and signed TIL-1 form.
