Sybrand van der Zwaag holds the honorary title of 'distinguished' professor of the TU Delft, is fellow of IOM3 and of Royal Society for Science in the Netherlands.  He received 5 gold medals for his work from German, French, USA and Chinese materials science societies. 

Biography

Sybrand van der Zwaag was full professor Materials Science at the TU Delft from 1992 till 2021.  He first led the section Microstructural Control in Metals (1992-2003) and has been chair of the Novel Aerospace Materials group till his statutory retirement on 16th September 2021.  In his academic career he has supervised over 60 PhD theses, over 120 MSc theses and has published over 600 articles on a range of materials science related topic dealing with metals, polymers, functional ceramics, self healing materials and more recently noise mitigating structures. As professor emeritus he will continue the supervision of four NovAM PhD students working on self healing creep steels, piezoceramics, Covalent Organic Frameworks and Quantum computing for new materials and structures.  With his external colleagues he will work on  noise abating structures, machine learning and metallurgy and further exploration of the chemical boundary concept, his latest addition to the physical metallurgy toolbox for advanced microstructural control.  He still spends about 1 day per week at the TUD Delft
