Profile

Profile

Saqr studied his Bachelor of chemical engineering at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). He also pursued his MSc study in UTM and Shibaura Institute of Technology (SIT), Tokyo, Japan. Saqr specialized in the fields of environmental engineering, resources recovery, environmental impact assessment, and analysing and improving sustainable practices at an industrial level.

During his MSc thesis, Saqr worked on the co-digestion of municipal wastewater with food waste and palm oil mill effluent (POME), both experimentally and via predictive modelling such as regression and artificial neural network models. The main outcomes revealed that co-digestion, indeed, enhances the biodegradability efficiency of municipal wastewater. As a part of his MSc thesis, Saqr also investigated the environmental impact of Suzu city fermentation plant in Japan to propose strategies to further mitigate the greenhouse emissions from the plant and make the plant more energy independent. Saqr proposed that biogas storage and utilization for heating the plant, especially in the winter, would reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and utilize the collected biogas.

Since February 2018, Saqr started his PhD research with the PEOPLE project to enhance the sustainable practices in the palm oil industry, while improving the socioeconomic aspects of palm oil communities. He worked on the integration of solar gasification and anaerobic digestion to design a net-zero treatment plant of palm oil resides: empty fruit bunch (EFB) and palm oil mill effluent (POME). The final product of his PhD project is a business case that could create business opportunities for palm oil communities.

Aside from research, Saqr is a public speaker, communication and leadership trainer, and evaluator in Toastmasters International for over 4 years. He believes that connecting with people can take us far beyond what we can imagine. For that, feel free to contact him if you want to know more about his research and ambition to make an impact on the water and energy industries of the future.
