Although Remko’s publications cover the full range of hydrological science (see www.orcid.org/0000-0001-7418-4445), his main research lines are (1) the measurement and parameterization of the space-time variability of rainfall using ground-based remote sensing techniques and (2) the development of opportunistic sensing techniques as a novel way to inform hydrological science and applications (see Keynote lecture “Opportunistic sensing – tapping into new sources of hydrologic information”, YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=Em2wvxwKxtM (from 10:10 to 18:55), “Lightning Talks II: Future Water”, AGU Centennial Fall Meeting, San Francisco, USA, 10 December 2019). He is leading the research group that was among the first in the world to apply microwave links from commercial cellular communication networks for rainfall monitoring (https://doi.org/10.1029/2006WR005631). His research group has been the first to demonstrate that such networks can provide near real-time monitoring of the space-time dynamics of rainfall at the scale of an entire densely populated country (https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1217961110). Remko’s group also pioneered the use of crowdsourced smartphone battery temperatures to infer inner-city screen level air temperatures (https://doi.org/10.1002/grl.50786). Since 2001 Remko has been able to attract more than 5 million euros in personal research funding, including a prestigious 5-year (~700,000 euro) personal grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Since 2007 Remko has supervised 31 PhD students who successfully completed their PhD theses. He is frequently invited to give seminars / keynotes on his work. Remko has been a long-time convener of sessions at scientific conferences (e.g. AGU and EGU) and he acts regularly as scientific board member of such meetings. He was the organizer, with Dr. Hidde Leijnse (KNMI), of the 11th International Precipitation Conference (1–3 July 2013, Wageningen) and of the 10th European Conference on Radar in Meteorology and Hydrology (1–6 July 2018, Wageningen).
Biography
Remko Uijlenhoet received both the MSc degree (Hydrology and Water Resources, 1990) and the PhD degree (Hydrometeorology, 1999) from Wageningen University. From 1997 to 1999 he was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Laboratoire d’Etude des Transferts en Hydrologie et Environnement (LTHE) in Grenoble, France. From 2000 to 2001 he was a Research Associate in the Water Resources Program at Princeton University, USA. In 2001 he received a 5-year grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) to set up a research team in Hydrometeorology, within the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group at Wageningen University. In 2006 he became an Associate Professor and in 2007 he was appointed Full Professor and Chair of Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management at Wageningen University. In 2020 he moved to Delft University of Technology, where he is appointed as Professor of Hydrology & Water Resources in the Water Management Department of the Civil Engineering and Geosciences Faculty. Academic background
Remko Uijlenhoet is Professor of Hydrology & Water Resources in the Department of Water Management of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Delft University of Technology. Before joining TU Delft (on November 1st, 2020), he was Professor and Chair of the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group at Wageningen University & Research since 2007. Remko Uijlenhoet holds BSc, MSc and PhD degrees from Wageningen University. During his career, he spent a total of six years abroad, in the US (Beltsville, Princeton, Duke), France (Grenoble) and Spain (Barcelona).
