Research interests
My vision is to develop new technological solutions for tackling critical healthcare challenges, initially focussing on cardiovascular diseases (which represent the global leading cause of death). I will develop a high-resolution multi-material additive manufacturing (AM) technology to enable the fabrication of 3D microfluidics devices. These will be used as innovative tools for an effective treatment development and an in-depth understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases such as thrombosis and stroke. Moreover, this high-resolution AM technology will remove fabrication barriers not only in the field of microfluidics for healthcare but also for all applications that require the integration of multiple functions (i.e. electrodes, sensing areas, regions with different flexibility) and that would benefit from a single-step fabrication process.
Academic background
Dr. Paola Fanzio is Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE), Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME), Micro and Nano Engineering section since May15th 2023.
Dr. Paola Fanzio received her Master's degree in Physics at the University of Genova (Italy) in 2008 and her PhD at the Italian Institute of Technology (Doctoral school on Robotic, Neuroscience, Nanotechnology and Drug Discovery) in 2012.
After a PostDoc at the University of Genova and a PostDoc at the Precision and Microsystems Engineering department (TUDelft), dr. Fanzio worked for 5 year in the Dutch company UltiMaker B.V., initially with a role of Function Lead and subsequently as Research Lead Extrusion.
In May 2023, she joined the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of High-resolution Multi-Material Additive Manufacturing for Microfluidic Applications within the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME).
