Profile
Projects
João’s research focuses on improving the modelling of water supply systems with intermittent operation. Intermittent water supply (IWS) is characterised by a filling-supply-depressurizing and emptying cycle which existing models cannot simulate. Other main characteristics are high leakage rates, higher pipe failure rates and compromised water quality. His work focuses on improving IWS modelling in its dynamic stages. Such improvements aim to reduce pressure variations, reduce entrapped air in pipes and better estimate service connections’ supplying time.

Biography
João is from Lisbon, Portugal, and did his BSc and MSc in civil with an emphasis in Hydraulic Engineering. He carried out previous research on hydraulic transients in pipes and pumps running as turbines. He worked as an external consultant on hydropower systems and worked in Lisbon’s water utility on Asset Management. He started his PhD in November 2019.
