Effective August 2020, Evelien Bruggeman will join Delft University of Technology for two days a week as Professor of Construction Law in the Faculty of Architecture.

Evelien studied Civil Law at the Faculty of Law of Leiden University. From 2003 to 2008, Evelien was employed at the Institute for Construction Law where she worked, among other things, on her dissertation De koop-/aannemingsovereenkomst in breed perspectief 

From September 2008 to september 2016, Evelien worked as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of the Netherlands (Civil Law Section). Since September 2016 she has been working again at the Institute for Construction Law as senior legal researcher private law, after which Evelien became director of the Institute for Construction Law as of January 2020.

For several years, Evelien has been engaged in research on the influence of new (construction) techniques on construction contract law, in particular the legal aspects of working with digitization and data and in particular Building Information Modelling (BIM). Evelien has been giving courses and lectures for lawyers and non-lawyers for almost twenty years in areas such as construction contract law, contracting, the Building Quality Assurance Act, legal aspects of structural safety and the legal aspects of data and digitization and Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Her inaugural speech took place on the 16th of September 2022 and was titled “Legal implications of data exchange in the built environment: An exploration of the force field between technological and societal developments and law”. Download is available here

Evelien is a regular contributor to the Tijdschrift voor Consumentenrecht, a member of the editorial board of the Tijdschrift voor Bouwrecht (TBR) and has publications to her name on topics including construction contract law in a broad sense, the purchase/contracting agreement, the Wet Kwaliteitsborging voor het Bouwen (Act on Quality Assurance in Construction), constructional safety (or safety of buildings) and site safety and the legal aspects of working with BIM and data and digitization in construction. Evelien is an active member of the group law@BIM, an international network of lawyers dealing with the legal aspects of working with BIM including at the meetings of Building SMART. In addition, Evelien is General Secretary of the European Society of Construction Law.
