Dr. C.F. (Caroline) Fiório Grilo MSc

Profile

Dr. Caroline F. Grilo is an assistant professor conducting multidisciplinary research in the Section of Environmental Fluid Mechanics in the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at TU Delft. Her research line is focused on chemical drivers for sedimentary process and dynamics of fine sediments. Results may provide a foundation for the development and optimization of Nature-Based Solutions in muddy environments, Circular Building and support fine tailings management.

Caroline is a member of the MUDNET network and the head of the lab where most projects are conducted. The MUDNET is a multi-disciplinary research network that generates new applied knowledge on mud-related topics.

Academic background

My Graduation and Master’s course were focused on marine and coastal environment pollution, while my PhD was focused on geochemical markers and mangrove resilience. I have 7 years’ experience in an environmental monitoring program after iron ore tailings input in the fluvial and marine environments, where I focused on the properties of flocculation process of cohesive sediments and sedimentary process. After, I took part as a researcher in the Quaternary Science focusing on sedimentology and mineralogy for the Oil and Gas industry. I was also consultant for implementation of nature based solutions for management of fine sediment slurries.
