Profile
Biography
Dr. Bregje van Wesenbeeck is an associate professor in nature and hydraulic engineering. She is also the scientific director of Deltares, and a senior expert in nature-based solutions. Here research focusses on ecosytem response under extreme stresses and under long-term pressures and looks into the interaction between ecsystems and hydrodynamics and morphodynamics. She applies this knowledge in the field of nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction with a focus on salt marshes and mangroves. She strives to strengthen the scientific foundation and further practical application of integrating nature in civil engineering. She has over 15 years’ experience in working with development banks, UN, NGO’s and governments in Asia, Africa, USA and the Netherlands, for whom she provides advice on flood risk reduction, erosion mitigation and climate change adaptation and especially how proper management of natural resources, rivers and coast can contribute in a positive way to these goals. At the university she is responsible for supervising PhD students, postdocs and MSc students. She also developed and coordinates the master course on Building with Nature and she teaches in several courses on bachelor and master level.
