Profile
My research focuses on understanding how groundwater quality is influenced by reactive transport processes, such as contaminant transport and degradation or nitrogen cycling. I use numerical models to simulate the complex interplay of chemical, biological, and physical factors that shape water quality.
Addressing and quantifying the inherent uncertainties in reactive transport modeling is a central aspect of my work. Reactive transport processes in the subsurface are complex, and limited data availability leads to large uncertainties in model structure, parameters, and predictions. I use Bayesian modeling to integrate process-based models with experimental data and expert knowledge while accounting for uncertainty.
I also investigate how we can better represent microbial processes in reactive transport models. My Ph.D. research focused on developing models of nitrogen cycling that integrate information from gene and transcript data.
In essence, my research aims to improve our understanding of reactive transport processes and make model predictions more reliable. In the long term, I would like to contribute to the optimization of groundwater management practices and facilitate informed decision making.
Academic background
Since 2023 I am an Assistant Professor at the Water Management department at TU Delft, where the focus of my research and teaching is on environmental water quality. I received my PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of Tübingen in Germany in 2022. Prior to my current position I worked as a postdoc at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
