A.P. (Arjen) Luijendijk

Profile

Arjen P. Luijendijk is an associate professor in Coastal Resilience and Morphology in the Coastal Engineering group of the Hydraulic Engineering department at TU Delft university.

Through collaboration in national and international research projects, he conducted research on morphodynamic modeling and Earth Observation of coastal changes worldwide. He is passionate about advancing knowledge and tools to better understand and predict the complex behaviour of our coasts under a changing climate and increasing human interventions.

Academic background

Arjen P. Luijendijk has a background in morphodynamic modelling of coasts and nature-based solutions and coastal remote sensing to unravel historical coastal behaviour.

Effective management of populated shores requires long-term sustainable use of coasts and maintenance of the most natural environment possible. To meet these demands, there is an increasing need for accurate coastal predictions to assess vulnerability and engineering solutions in order to protect coastal infrastructure, human safety and habitats.

To this end, it is his ambition to further develop knowledge and tools on i) Global Coastal Change in times of Climate Change, and ii) Data-model Fusion for Engineering Nature-Based Solutions in nearshore environments. He will focus on making scientific advancements on these topics by combining big data - from Earth Observation -, advanced numerical models and climate predictions.
