Biography

Istiaque Ahmed is PhD candidate in the Department of Urbanism (section Urban Design) at TU Delft. Istiaque holds a professional Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) degree from Khulna University in Bangladesh and an MSc (with Merit) from the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, UCL. For his master's studies in the UK, Istiaque was awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship in 2015. Prior to joining here, he served as a full-time faculty member in several public and private universities in Bangladesh, namely DUET, CUET, and SUB. Istiaque did research apprenticeship with the eminent Dhaka based architect Saif Ul Haque and was a member of the Study and Design team for the ‘Arcadia Education Project’, which received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture for 2017-2019 cycle.

As a built-environment professional, Istiaque’s research and practice focus on informal urbanisation, socio-environmental justice, urban risk, and participatory methodologies of design. He has undertaken action research, training, and capacity building at various levels and worked closely with communities to devise socio-environmentally just urbanisation strategies. His doctoral study is focused on climate adaptation and socio-spatial inequalities in cities.

Istiaque is affiliated with the Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB), UCL Alumni Network, Bangladesh Association of Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows (BACSAF), and Bangladesh UK Alumni Network (BUKAN).
