Digital Identity
With your NetID you have access to the necessary services and information to help you with your study or your work. It is your personal account at TU Delft for which you are responsible. Never share your login details (NetID and password) with other people, not even with your supervisor or secretary.
-
The combination of your username (NetID) and password is unique. This is comparable to keys: A key should only unlock something particular and specific to what is intended to unlock. If you lose your bike keys, you don't want the finder of the keys to access your car, or your house.
This concept can be applied directly to your digital identity. So make sure you only use your NetID password specific to your netID.
-
Generate long passwords - these are harder to hack. You can use a passphrase, such a sentence consists of words and characters that are meaningful to you, but not so much to others. Some examples are:
- mydogsbirthdayismarch4
- 37ismyluckynumber
- MaxandEmilearemy2nephews
As users, passphrases are supposed to be easier to remember.
-
How to remember all these passwords? Find something unique in your environment, they will help you remember your passphrases. You can also use a Password Manager. It is a software designed to create unique and strong passwords, and to keep your passwords.
You can considering using password managers such as:
- LastPass (www.lastpass.com)
- Dashlane (www.dashlane.com)
- KeePass (keepass.info)
-
Sensitive data, such as your bank details, require extra security. You can set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for this, which creates an extra verification step before you (or someone else) can log in. Some examples of 2FA are:
- A text message with a verification code;
- A code that is displayed on a token;
- A scan of your fingerprint (think of your bank's app).
TU Delft also uses 2FA for access to certain services.
-
For a number of third party applications and tools (outside TU Delft) you can use your TU Delft NetID and password to log in. You do not log in with a separate account for a particular service, but are redirected to the familiar TU Delft log-in screen. There you can log in with your trusted NetID and password.

Keep in mind that anything you share on the internet can be used against you. Therefore, be aware of the information put online, especially if its related to your personally. Make sure to secure your profile so that not everyone can see or access your photos and messages. Be aware that information you leave about yourself online can also be used to find out about you – such as, your personality and personal preferences. The combination of your name and date of birth can also be used to identify your password/account name.
