Accelerating the energy transition

The energy transition is essential to enable a sustainable future. While Europe aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, it’s also important to target energy independence and security. At Mechanical Engineering, we study multiple aspects within the energy landscape and contribute to accelerating its transition.

Our scientists work on decarbonising electricity generation, increasing energy efficiency, and electrification of industry, including energy conversion from renewable sources and synthetic fuels. We tackle non‐CO2 emissions in the energy production and utilization, including hydrogen production and propulsion approaches for mobile applications. We aim to optimise carbon capture, conversion, and storage technologies, alongside innovative approaches for atmospheric CO2 removal, to address hard-to-abate residual emissions. Finally, we’re deploying robust and resilient control algorithms to optimize energy production and distribution, ensuring maximum added value to the energy system, whether it's directed towards the grid, storage facilities, or conversion into hydrogen.
