TU Delft focuses on battery of the future
A major challenge in the energy transition is the efficient and flexible storage and transportation of renewable energy. Batteries will play an important role in this. However, much research and innovation are still required. In order to encourage this, on Thursday 11 May 2023 TU Delft will be launching e4BatteryDelft: a brand-new platform that will focus on electrochemical storage of renewable energy – with respect for the world around us, in a way that is affordable and also totally European.

Dingena Schott appointed professor of Machine Cargo Interaction Engineering
Dingena Schott has been appointed professor of Machine Cargo Interaction Engineering in the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology (M&TT) starting 26 April 2023. Schott’s research focuses on improving and developing tools for transporting and processing granular materials.

An improved dart and TU Delft research hit the bullseye for professional Dutch darts players
A dart that is less sensitive to player errors and is therefore almost 50% more accurate than a conventional dart. TU Delft researchers may have developed a groundbreaking dart that can significantly improve the performance of elite-level darts players.

Othon Moultos has been awarded an NWO OTP grant of 1 million euros for water treatment research
The board of NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences awards funding to seven research projects through the Open Technology Programme, a programme that gives companies and other organisations a way to join scientific research that should lead to applicable knowledge. One of the seven proposals has been awarded to Othon Moultos.

NWO has awarded six research projects in the KIC call ‘Key enabling technologies for minimally invasive interventions in healthcare’, including the research of Tim Horeman, Assistant Professor of Sustainable Surgery & Translational Technology at the Department of Biomechanical Engineering.

Girls’ Day 2023: inspired by science and technology at a young age
The annual Girls’ Day took place again on 30 March. It’s a day that gives girls the opportunity to experience how valuable and fun a technical education can be. Fifty pre-university students aged between 13 and 16 from Schiedam visited TU Delft’s 3mE faculty to learn more about mechanical engineering and – new this year – marine technology.

New CardioVascular Biomechanics Lab presents golden opportunity for engineers, physicians and patients alike
Delftse wetenschappers en studenten die onderzoek doen naar de biomechanica van het hart en bloedvaten werken samen met cardiologen, neurologen en radiologen van het Erasmus MC in het CardioVascular Biomechanics Lab (CVBL). Ze werken dagelijks aan biomechanische vraagstukken op het gebied van hart -en vaatziekten en blijken daarbij van onschatbare waarde voor elkaar.

New microchip links two Nobel Prize-winning techniques
Physicists at Delft University of Technology have built a new technology on a microchip by combining two Nobel Prize-winning techniques for the first time. This microchip could measure distances in materials at high precision, for example underwater or for medical imaging. The instrument could lead to new techniques to monitor the Earth’s climate and human health. The work is now published in Nature Communications.

TU Delft crowns best climate and energy publication
Een algoritme dat voor een hogere energieopbrengst van windparken zorgt én een onderzoek waaruit blijkt dat niet alleen brandstofverbruik maar ook seizoenseffecten een belangrijke rol spelen bij het optimaliseren van vliegroutes en vlieghoogtes. Dit zijn – in één zin samengevat – de twee grote winnende publicaties van de Beste Climate & Energy Paper Award. De awardceremonie, die woensdag 15 maart plaatsvond op de TU Delft, stond volledig in het teken van grote en kleine innovaties die een bijdrage leveren aan het versnellen van de energietransitie en het beteugelen van klimaatverandering.

The Ship Hydromechanics lab welcomes the upgraded Wave-Flume Tank
A number of internal relocations have taken place in the 3mE building the past year and one of them was the relocation of the Wave-Flume Tank. The tank has been moved from building section J to the API hall nearby in Leeghwaterstraat to create space for projects being conducted in the Fluid Mechanics Lab. The Wave-Flume Tank has returned home: at the Ship Hydromechanics Lab.

Rapid change of friction causes tactile ultrasound illusion
Michaël Wiertlewski, Assistant Professor at the Cognitive Robotics Department, and his colleagues have created a glass plate that can quickly change its friction. It does this with an actuator that releases waves of ultrasound to vibrate the plate. Their research is published in the ‘Royal Society Interface journal’.

John van den Dobbelsteen has been appointed professor of Medical Process Engineering. His research focuses on improving the interaction between surgical staff and medical technology, with a particular emphasis on alleviating hiccups in the workflow throughout the entire surgical process, from pre-op to post-op.

NWO-xs grant for new ‘Green’ way to produce Ammonia
The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded Mahinder Ramdin (P&E) an NWO-xs grant for his ‘Green Ammonia Production’ project, GAPLiC. Ammonia is important in the production of fertiliser, and therefore mass food production, but the current ammonia production process consumes enormous amounts of energy - 1% of all the energy produced globally.

Visualising internal stresses in solid polymers using colour-changing Spiropyrans
Spiropyrans are chemicals that change colour when you shine light on them – a useful property in many areas of medicine and technology. Now Georgy Filonenko and his colleague, Richard Janissen at the Faculty of Applied Science have discovered a new use for these so-called photochromic molecules - visualising stresses in solid polymers. Their research is published in the ‘Journal of the American Chemical Society.’

New methods to investigate the interface between biomaterials and cells to help regenerate body tissues
Lidy Fratila-Apachitei and Murali Ghatkesar received a Cohesion grant to investigate how 3-D printed pillars with features in the sub-micrometre range can affect adhesion and mechanics of living progenitor cells at single cell level. Together with postdoc researcher Livia Angeloni and the other collaborators, they developed and applied a novel method based on fluid force microscopy.
