From table salt to nuclear energy
Nick ter Veer, a PhD student at the Delft University of Technology, has recently synthesized a promising thorium chloride salt, that can be used to fuel a new generation of nuclear reactors. Thorium has great potential, in combination with an uranium or plutonium based fuel, for a more sustainable nuclear fuel cycle, thereby producing less long lived radioactive waste. Together with the Reactor Physics & Nuclear Materials research team, he is now looking at this salt’s properties, to assess its suitability for use in the so-called Molten Salt Reactors.

Innovative Health Initiative grant of EUR 24 million to improve cancer treatments
The Innovative Health Initiative has awarded a EUR 24 million grant to the IMAGIO consortium of clinical partners coordinated by Philips, with additional resources and funding by industry partners. The consortium will carry out research into improving clinical outcomes through less invasive treatments for lung cancer, liver cancer and soft tissue sarcomas.

NWO grant for a cost-effective power-generating solar window
In dit project zullen TU Delft, Physee en NSG-Pilkington een kosteneffectief energieopwekkend luminescerende coating voor ramen ontwikkelen op basis van het principe van een luminescente zonneconcentrator. Dit zal worden bereikt met nieuwe luminescerende materialen die uniform over het gehele zichtbare zonnespectrum kunnen absorberen, de geabsorbeerde energie opnieuw kunnen emitteren en transporteren naar zonnecellen.
