Claudio is a master student in Life Sciences at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland. The ultimate goal of this master project is to achieve transcranial ultrasound image quality sufficient to reliably differentiate various anatomical structures in intact human brain as well as the location of the deep brain stimulation electrodes in respect to those anatomical structures (e.g. subthalamic nucleus). His supervisor is Verya Daeichin.

Delft Bioengineering Institute has granted Elizabeth Carroll with €2500 for the execution of an interdisciplinary MSc project. Together with Zoltán Perkό (Radiation Science & Technology), Elizabeth has designed a project that looks into ultrahigh dose-rate FLASH irradiation in zebrafish. In total, BEI has granted 15 MSc projects that resulted from the networking event BioDate 2018 in March.

The EOS biennial Meeting will be held in Delft from 8-12 October, where the latest results in optics and photonics research will be presented. Netherlands is the hot spot for photonics in Europe and the strong optics research and industry in Delft makes it a perfect location to hold the upcoming symposium.

NWO has announced the Veni recipients for 2018. Amongst them are four researchers from the faculty of Applied Sciences: Jeremy Brown (RST), Zoltán Perkó (RST), Georgy Filonenko (ChemE) and Carlas Smith (ImPhys). The Veni grants allow researchers who have recently obtained their PhD to conduct independent research and develop their ideas for a period of three years.

We welcome Erasmus student Andrei Stefancu, Medical Physics student from Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Romania. During his summer research internship he will work on optical tomographic imaging of tissue biopsies. His supervisors are Jos van Rooij and Jeroen Kalkman.

The publication entitled "Ray-based method for simulating cascaded diffraction in high NA systems", published in Journal of the Optical Society of America A, has been highlighted as an Editor's Pick.

Xin Meng is joining the lab of Daan Brinks as a PhD student. He'll work on instrument and method development for new voltage imaging modalities.
