100 DAYS OF... Students Taking Responbility | Journal Club | 26 November
For this edition, the Journal Club will come together to discuss the Expectancy-Value-Cost Model of Motivation in relation to student motivation and learning. In doing so, the Journal Club selected two articles. Participants are encouraged to read both papers; however, for those with limited time, the Barron & Hulleman paper is recommended.

Taking responsibility for learning: A motivational exploration through the lens of the Expectancy, Value, and Cost Model of Motivation
Taking responsibility for learning refers to a self-regulated process through which students aim to produce or prevent certain outcomes (Lauermann & Karabenick, 2011). Yet the question remains: What motivates students to take ownership of their learning, and what factors influence this self-regulated action? Drawing on the Expectancy, Value, and Cost Model of Motivation (Barron & Hulleman, 2014; Eccles & Wigfield, 2000), we will examine the interplay of three critical constructs – expectancy for success, perceived value of the task, and the perceived cost of engaging with the task – that drive students' academic choices and behaviours. In this journal club session, we will delve into how these EVC constructs not only influence students' motivation and performance but also their willingness to take responsibility for their learning. We will discuss practical implications of the EVC model within our own educational practices and explore strategies for fostering environments where students are supported to take greater responsibility for their learning.
