PhD+Postdoc: AR/VR interactive techniques for education
During the last years, distance learning has become ubiquitous. Nevertheless, mixed-reality in an educational scenario is still limited and under-explored due to many standing challenges, especially regarding interactivity.
This project is in collaboration with other universities and industry partners around Europe. It aims to shed light on the current issues and propose novel and exciting mixed-reality solutions for education.
Within the project’s scope, we aim at developing novel interaction, navigation and visualization methods for mixed reality to allow for effective visual communication and improve the educational experience. A more specific goal, for example, is to facilitate demonstrations and collaborative tasks. Some of the possible research directions within Computer Graphics and Visualization are non-photorealistic rendering and illustration techniques for AR/VR, gaze guidance, and camera and location management to enhance physical awareness.
The candidate will be part of the exciting Computer Graphics and Visualization Group ([https://graphics.tudelft.nl/](https://graphics.tudelft.nl/)) and will have the possibility to collaborate in other related projects, such as mixed-reality in the medical and sports domains, as well as other Computer Graphics topics of interest.

Postdoc/programmer: Sail Regatta of the Future
This position will be part of a project in collaboration with the Sailing Innovation Centre (sailinginnovationcentre.nl), whose goal is to create excitement for the sailing sport by involving modern technologies.
A sailing athlete has to consider complex information; the boat, the wind, the sea currents and more to decide how to act and react. While athletes are trained in combining these factors, for external observers, their decisions are not always clear. Further, many of the factors that went into the decision are not directly available and it is quite difficult to follow a competition without the necessary background knowledge. The goal of this project is to make the information understandable and accessible to a larger audience to improve the engagement of the observers.
We explore new and exciting ways to interact with the sport that will also lead to cutting-edge research in Computer Graphics, Visualization, or other related fields. The candidate will actively contribute in designing and developing the appropriate solution and will have freedom in choosing the methodology and technology that best fits his research background and ambitions, such as, Visualization methods, Virtual and Augmented Reality technologies, new Interaction modalities, Simulations, Game technologies, among others.
The project is supported by many partners, including several companies providing streaming models and sailing-related data via sensors and the candidate will work closely with a PhD student, who is investigating data models to discover patterns in order to improve training analysis. The work will further be developed in a practical setting with strong collaboration with the sailors, coaches, and other members of the Sailing Innovation Center. The developed research is intended to be employed in future sailing competitions by the Dutch Sailing Team.

PhD+Postdoc: High performance visualization and analysis of genome data
Genomic and genetic understanding might be a key component in creating more resistant plants via breeding strategies that can address major hurdles in the food supply around the globe. Nevertheless, the ever-increasing amounts of genomic data that are needed in these investigations lead to many challenges. Inadequate visualization solutions as well as long processing times negatively impact work efficiency.
We propose to investigate purpose-designed visualization solutions that aid users in their exploration and comprehension of large genomic datasets. The visualization solutions will be supported by novel algorithms and data structures specifically developed to efficiently manage large amounts of genetic markers and/or DNA sequences. We want to achieve these goals using modern high-performance techniques that have proven useful in the field of Computer-Graphics. Hereby, we intend to enable the interactive exploration, analysis, annotation, and collaboration on such data.
Specifically, several questions will guide our research. How to tradeoff efficiency in storage and performance for visualizing vast amounts of genome data? What visualization techniques/paradigms are suitable for different types of genomic data? How to learn, extract, highlight patterns from such data? How to annotate and summarize genome information? How to enable interactive collaborations among several researchers? In fact, the PhD candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with domain experts to gain insights into their workflows and requirements.
Additionally, given the generality of some of the envisioned solutions, we will search for applications in other areas of the field of Computer Graphics as well.

PhD+Postdoc: Multi-view Rendering
The classic setting of a standard screen, a compute device, and a single user is about to change, with the advent of many-view rendering scenarios. Stereoscopic, virtual-reality, augmented reality, multi-view, and soon light-field and holographic displays (to provide correct depth perception) enter the mass market and require many images of the same content. Similarly, other applications, such as remote-rendering with large crowds operating low-performance devices, or complex light transport phenomena (see image) lead to structurally similar challenges. This project addresses the topic of many-view rendering via three research lines with high potential for scientific and technological impact. First, we want to identify and reduce recurring computations. Second, given that the user interprets the image, we aim at reducing costs by exploiting perceptual limitations. Finally, we will conceive novel design tools to build efficient content for many-view scenarios.

Postdoc: Creative Computer Graphics
In this work, we plan to investigate solutions for creative content production to support the creation of high quality visual content by novice users. The work will combine aspects of computer graphics, perception, and computational photography. The idea is to rely on perceptual insights to improve the outcome of a creation process. The postdoc will be able to investigate several projects, ranging from computational photography, over stereo perception, to interactive style control and transfer.
