Sten Vollebregt is a new tenure tracker within our micro-electronics department. Although he is not exactly new to this faculty. Sten has had a long EEMCS track record. He started as a Bsc. student and never left the building. His work focusses on Emerging Materials for Integrated Circuits and MEMS Technology, mainly for gas and pressure sensors.
Sten: "Why would I leave? We are just too spoiled with all the facilities at this faculty. You can do everything in-house. We had a good laugh about it within the department. Compared to other more senior colleagues who consider themselves fossils at this faculty, I am perhaps more like a dinosaur. Although, I obviously do work on new chip technology, like nano-tubes, graphene, and other 2D materials. Basically, everything that is not yet standard in silicon technology. Another example are wide-bandgap semi-conductors, which can be used as sensors in harsh environments like space and automotive applications. I work closely with my peers from the ME and TNW faculties and my job is to integrate the novel materials and devices on the chip. We need to go from lab to fab by creating sensors on chips that can be produced on a large scale.”
