Research into masonry by Prof.dr.ir. Jan Rots TU Delft
Professor Jan Rots of the Technical University in Delft is one of the leading scientists in the research field of the strength of buildings. In this film he talks about the studies that have been performed in the Stevin laboratory into the strength of building materials, the occurrence of damage and the safety of buildings.

Research into damage to buildings caused by earthquakes
Earthquakes cause damage to buildings. These are mainly cracks in walls. In the Stevin laboratory of the Technical University in Delft, research is being done into the initiation of cracks and the growth of cracks under different loads. Loads from subsidence, earthquakes or a combination of these are considered. This film shows a so-called "windowbank test".

Research into connections in buildings
The connections between walls and floors are very important for the strength of a house. Professor Jan Rots of the Technical University in Delft explains in this film why these connections are so important. Researcher Geert Ravenshorst explains an experiment in which such a connection is tested.

Research into shear strength of masonry
Masonry is widely used in the construction of houses in the Netherlands, including in Groningen. It is a difficult material to characterize. In the laboratory of the Technical University in Delft, assistant professor Rita Esposito explains which tests have been carried out to determine the strength of masonry.
