Fatemeh Mostafavi
Considering the suggestion for everyone to select a piece from the BK model collection, what led you to decide on this particular one?
Fatemeh Mostafavi: My choice of 'House Wentzel' is intricately tied to my current research on developing a machine learning framework that aims to analyze extensive architectural plan data for environmental features, augmenting architects’ approach to environmental design. This house, built in 1931 in Aalsmeer, aligns seamlessly with these goals. Jan Gerko Wiebenga developed it as a prototype, experimenting with modern and efficient living spaces within the context of a predetermined plot. This challenge of translating a set of specific requirements into a functional layout mirrors the complexities faced in contemporary environmental architectural design - a challenge my AI-based model seeks to address, too. Therefore, in selecting 'House Wentzel,' I saw an opportunity to bridge past architectural innovation with present-day technological advancements, showcasing a model that not only stands as a testament to efficient, thoughtful design but also serves as a practical example aligning with the goals of my research.
Fatemeh’s installation is part of her ongoing PhD Research titled: ‘Visible Context in AI-driven Residential Building Design’. More information about Fatemeh’s PhD research can be found here.
