Connecting the Dots

An Exhibition by the Design, Data, and Society Group

"Connecting the Dots" celebrates the first two years of the Design, Data, and Society Group at the Department of Architecture. Featuring selected projects, stories, and resources from the group’s research and teaching, the exhibition fosters the question: What does designing mean in a society balancing the datafication of life with urgent social and environmental issues?

As architects and students of design, we are inheriting a world where the lines between human and machine, design and data, are becoming increasingly blurred. Machine learning is not just altering the tools we use; it is reshaping our fundamental methods of narration, creation, and understanding. The written word, once a static medium, now becomes an interactive dialogue, a dance between human intuition and machine intelligence. Reading, in turn, transforms into a collaborative exploration, as algorithms learn to interpret, suggest, and even create alongside us. These shifts herald a new era of literacy, marked by fluidity, interactivity, and unprecedented creative potential.

From design information to building standards to climate models — architects have become curators in a data-driven world that leads to new spatial, cultural, aesthetic, social, and political paradigms of the built environment. Yet, amidst this technological renaissance, our commitment to storytelling, representation, and analytics remains steadfast. We utilize a wide array of visual tools, from data visualization to multimedia representation, to unravel the narratives hidden within data, connecting the dots between people, objects, and spaces. As we navigate this new landscape of architectural practice, we encourage you to embrace the changes, question the norms, and actively participate in the ongoing conversation between design and technology.

"Connecting the Dots" is curated as a critical yet optimistic platform, reusing models of the BK collection, and displaying a variety of conceptual snapshots and visual thoughts that address the complex interplay of design, data, and society.
