Research on drop-outs and transfer students at 3mE and CEG
The 3mE faculty and CEG faculty of TU Delft and The Hague University of Applied Sciences are conducting research to place and retain students in the most appropriate programmes as quickly as possible. For this purpose, they have received an AC grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
The AC grant is intended to facilitate the transition from higher professional education (HBO) to research-oriented higher education (WO) and vice versa, to better coordinate educational programmes and to create flexible learning paths. In this way, the educational institutions aim to place students in the engineering programme that best suits them, in order to retain students in the engineering sector. Due to the current drop-out rates, the institutions are focusing on the Mechanical Engineering, Marine Technology and Civil Engineering programmes.
A survey of all first-year students will be launched at the start of the 2023-2024 academic year. The aim is to gain insight into the extent and direction of transfers, the factors influencing the early termination or transfer of studies, and the motives and needs of students in their choice of study.
The first interventions after the research has been completed will prioritise establishing a sustainable monitoring and referral system for students who are in the wrong place. These measures include providing additional training for student mentors, developing good information about alternative study choices and increasing the focus on academic skills. The results of the research are expected in December 2024.
