Corrosion expert Arjan Mol does not expect a new rust ghost
Corrosion expert Prof. dr. Arjan Mol -TU Delft Materials Science and Engineering department - does not have the impression that cars suddenly start to rust horribly. But he thinks it's a good thing that garagists keep a close eye on corrosion protection.
"The bodywork of a car is more complicated than 30 years ago," says Mol. 'Nowadays, cars are made with a multitude of metals: high-strength steel, galvanized steel and, for example, lightweight aluminum alloys. The places where these materials come together are extra sensitive to corrosion. In addition, the car industry is increasingly switching from phosphating - a corrosion protection treatment that has long proven itself - to more energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly treatments. How good those alternative coatings are, must prove practice. But I do not expect the 'rust ghost' from the eighties to return. Read more.
