Official launch of e-Refinery
On Tuesday 22 May, the e-Refinery was the talk of the day at the Process & Energy lab. The e-Refinery is the brand-new consortium that is using a unique integrated approach, including the materials, processes and upscaling, to help the chemical and energy industry to electrify and decarbonise. Together with programme manager Paulien Herder, dean Theun Baller and Lucas van Vliet, dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, officially launched the consortium at the 3mE pilot plant.
Theun Baller:
‘With the e-Refinery, TU Delft and industry are making a substantial investment in the climate challenge facing the chemical and energy industry. In addition, we are training the energy experts of the future to develop sustainable fuels and raw materials. What makes the e-Refinery unique is the fact that TU Delft has all of the necessary expertise and is consolidating it, so that the entire chain, including the materials, processes and upscaling, is taken into account. Together with industry and knowledge institutes, we are going to take on the challenge of accelerating the transition to sustainability.’
Lucas van Vliet:
‘The electrification of the chemical industry is an important and necessary step in the forthcoming energy transition. In addition to reducing the CO2 footprint, it presents a wealth of opportunities for the energy sector and chemical industry. The e-Refinery, which TU Delft has been working on from various angles and disciplines, is a key priority in this process. The integrated Delft approach always operates with the ultimate goal in mind. It’s a recipe that dovetails well with a public-private partnership that benefits progress towards an e-Refinery on an industrial scale.’
