Whereas in seismic interferometry an actual receiver is needed at the position of the virtual source, it has recently been discovered that virtual sources can in principle be created anywhere in the subsurface, even when real sources and receivers are present at the surface only. This opened a fundamentally new line of research on seismic imaging.
