Geo-Database Management Center

The Geo-Database Management Centre (GDMC) is the research and development centre for all activities related to the modelling, storage, retrieval, analysis, presentation and distribution of geo-information. Its core users are staff members of the TU Delft Digital Technologies sections. They mainly collaborate with (project) partners and thesis students from the MSc-tracks Geomatics and GIMA.

The GDMC is mainly a research facility for spatial database research at the TU Delft, often in collaboration with industry and government partners. It features a range of digital tools. The GDMC hosts a server which can perform heavy-duty calculations: HP DL380p Gen8 server (32 threads), Linux RHEL 6.5, 128GB main memory, >100TB storage. It also grants access to several virtual machines:

  • gdmc.nl (gist.bk.tudelft.nl), a server used for dissemination, events, papers, and other outreach activities. CentOS 7 (64 bits), 2 CPUs, 394 Gb.
  • varioscale.tudelft.nl, a server used for creating detailed maps. It allows the user to gradually move between scales. Ubuntu, 1 CPU, 1GB main memory, 40GB disk.
  • geo1101.bk.tudelft.nl, a server used for Geomatics thesis projects. Ubuntu, 1 CPU, 1GB main memory, 20GB disk.
  • ahn2.pointclouds.nl (ahn.bk.tudelft.nl), a server which allows a 3D interactive view of the entire Netherlands. Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS, 4 CPUs, NAS 5 Tb.

The GDMC maintains several external domain names: isoladm.org, pointclouds.nl, nd-pc.org. Members make use of a range of software: Oracle, Enterprise Architect, FME, ArcGIS Pro, LASTools, PostgreSQL, QGIS. And finally, partners of the GDMC grant us access to laser scanners, which consist of an iPad, a BLK2GO scanner, and ZEB Revo RT.

Examples of GDMC research projects can be found here and here. You can read about examples of doctoral research here and here. More information about the GDMC, including current staff and upcoming events, can be found on their website.
