Marco van der Laan
I received my BSc and MSc degrees in Physics combined at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam with a focus on sustainable- and renewable energy technologies. Since September 2018, I have been doing my PhD at the University of Amsterdam under the supervision of Prof. Peter Schall in close collaboration with, and under co-supervision of, Prof. Laurens Siebbeles at the TU Delft.
My topic is the photoluminescence properties of semiconducting 2D materials with a focus on working towards photovoltaic applications. I investigate the optical properties of these 2D materials and hope to eventually observe second-order phenomena such as carrier multiplication from photoluminescence studies. Under the right conditions, this observation will be a good indicator of the applicability of this carrier multiplication process in future solar cell devices for enhanced power conversion efficiencies.
