Take the next step in blended education – a guide to help you
Blended education is complex. A successful blended course consists of a good course design, but also takes educational tools, interaction and inclusiveness into consideration.
In addition to the above, a blended course never stands alone. It is always embedded into a programme. This means that study loads need to be aligned, courses need to be aligned and flexibility needs to be designed – because programmes also always exist within the broader TU Delft context. Brightspace-support and the NewMedia Centre are there to help lecturers, however, learning spaces and policies also need to be taken into account. Which adds to the complexity.
Easy steps and concrete tips
To make blended education a bit more tangible, the EMBED model and brand the new EMBED Implementation Guidelines were developed. These are the result of four years of TU Delft’s participation in the European Maturity Model for Blended Education (EMBED). It supports lectures, course teams, programme coordinators, educational advisor and management in making blended education.
The model describes blended education on three levels: course, programme and institution. Each level consists of dimensions (see picture below), which collectively reflect the complexity of that level. The new EMBED-implementation guidelines give you concrete tips, models and articles for each dimension. In guides you in taking the next step toward a more mature blended education format.
One, two, three
How can you take the next step in blended education? In three easy ways.
1. Download the EMBED implementation guidelines and learn more about the EMBED model. Tip: the free MOOC on EMBED "Making blended education work" can kick-start you in getting acquainted with the model.
2. Discuss this model in your team; perhaps it can inspire other lecturers, educational advisers or management to talk about their (blended) education. Tip: share the A3 EMBED poster with your colleagues.
3. Start working with EMBED. Discuss it with your colleagues, see where you stand, and where you want to go.
If you want to get started with this model, have any questions, need advice, or just want to discuss EMBED a bit more, please contact Wiebe Dijkstra (w.p.dijkstra@tudelft.nl).
Good luck!
