Sylvia Mooij
Here at TU Delft, our faculties tend to operate like islands that can be hard to connect. Whereas it is a lot of fun and quite informative to see how things are done differently at other faculties. Which is why one of the things I like most about IDEE is the interfaculty team composition.
Background
Sylvia Mooij is a senior lecturer at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, with a background in Marketing of New Products. Over the years, Sylvia developed a strong interest in education, both in research and execution. Exemplary of this are her leading role in the recent revision of the IDE BSc programme and her contributions to the education research project ‘Healthy Challenging Design Education’ of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment and the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. Amongst the many roles Sylvia plays in education – teacher, supervisor, coach, education coordinator, researcher – she particularly enjoys supervising and coaching students. One of the things that Sylvia finds most important is that her students graduate having a solid sense of their own unique profile and identity as a designer, and she enjoys being a part of this process.
Towards IDEE
When Sylvia first heard about IDEE, she was eager to join as it offered a natural continuation of the education focussed route that Sylvia has been on for the past years. Two out of three IDEE themes were particularly interesting to Sylvia, but in the end she decided for the IDEE theme Students taking responsibility for their own learning process. There is a nice connection between the IDEE theme and the IDE BSc programme revision that Sylvia led, since the latter was based on a closely related theme of the didactic concept, namely autonomous learning. Sylvia sees IDEE as a good opportunity to continue developing herself in educational research and to bring back insights from IDEE to the BSc and MSc programmes of IDE.
As part of IDEE
“Here at TU Delft, our faculties tend to operate like islands that can be hard to connect. Whereas it is a lot of fun and quite informative to see how things are done differently at other faculties. Which is why one of the things I like most about IDEE is the interfaculty team composition.”
Did you know that ...?
- Sylvia is also the Academic Portfolio Director of Skills for Engineers at the Extension School, which is why she felt a strong connection as well to the IDEE theme Future Engineering Skills.
