Grant Penny
In whatever way we move forward, we do so through education and learning. This landscape, however, has undergone dramatic changes because of the impact of new technologies. What changes are needed in education to enable students to effectively operate within our increasingly digitalized society? This is an important question that in my work I focus on.
Background
Grant Penny works at Teaching and Learning Services as a member of ENHANCE: European Universities of Technology Alliance. Grant has a background in politics, sociology and education technology and a special interest in anything to do with questions related to the impact of technology on education. It is Grant’s firm belief that, in whatever way we move forward, we do so through education and learning. This landscape, however, has undergone dramatic changes because of the impact of new technologies. It is questions like “What changes are needed in education to enable students to effectively operate within our increasingly digitalized society?” that Grant focuses on.
As part of IDEE
As a member of ENHANCE, Grant leads work package 4: Future Skills for Engineers and Scientists. Thus, when Grant heard about the IDEE theme Future Engineering Skills, he immediately saw an opportunity for alignment between ENHANCE and IDEE. Although there might be differences in focus, both initiatives turn to the question of how to shape education in such a way that students learn the skills they need in order to contribute to solving today’s societal and global challenges. At IDEE, Grant is an enthusiastic sparring partner and a linking pin between ENHANCE and IDEE, sharing research and findings that could be beneficial to both initiatives.
Did you know that …?
- Together with colleagues, Grant did a substantial amount of work on the Vision of Education for 2030? He focused especially on bringing a social-science educational viewpoint to shape and sometimes challenge the Vision’s direction.
