Robust and user-friendly electrosurgery

The electrosurgical unit is one of the most frequently used surgical devices in operating theatres worldwide. The benefits of using this device during surgery are for example: the significant reduction of blood loss and that surgeries can be performed more efficiently.  The availability of these devices is limited in low resource areas, despite the large surgical need. Additionally, low resource areas often lack blood banks, so to reduce blood loss during surgery is even more important than in high resource areas. During several field studies we performed in different African countries the number of electrosurgical units found within operating theatres was limited. Additionally, the sustainable use is restricted due to high costs for the disposable accessories, and high maintenance costs.

We are working on a context-specific design of an electrosurgical unit that is battery powered, portable and comes with reusable accessories. By reduction of functions the product remains affordable, and by the use innovative design we ensure that our electrosurgical unit functions at the same level as current devices available on the market
