About Us
Solar Urban is part of the Urban Energy Institute of TU Delft. It is a cooperation between the Photovoltaic Materials and Devices Group within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science, the Climate Design & Sustainability Group within the Faculty of Architecture, and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS). PVMD – Photovoltaic Materials and Devices
Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science
The PVMD group, under guidance from dr. Olindo Isabella, focuses on the development of photovoltaic technologies throughout the value chain. The development of silicon solar cells and future tandem devices, investigation into innovative materials for cells and modules, and the development of new concepts for PV applications are all part of the research and development of the group. This broad focus within the group leads to a thorough understanding of the technical possibilities and physical limits of the system and allows easy manipulation of one part of the chain (like cells) to accommodate wishes in another part (like architectural design). The broad focus, supported by accurate PV multi-scale modelling framework, allows the group to realize its leading strategy to implement solar energy everywhere.
CDS – Climate Design and Sustainability
Faculty of Architecture
The Climate Design and Sustainability group, under guidance from Prof. Andy van den Dobbelsteen, focuses on the realization of a future in which we are prepared for extreme weather conditions, while we are independent from fossil fuels and in which we only use materials from the circular economy. This wide view on how a city should be organized, incorporates the organization of energy networks, urban planning down to the design of a building, incorporating renewable technologies, like solar energy. The multidisciplinary approach needed to realize the goals, requires input from architects, building technologists, physicists, urban planners, construction specialists and industrial ecologists, who are all represented in the CDS group. The broad focus allows the group to realize its leading strategy to integrate sustainable climate concepts in architectural design and urban planning.
AMS Institute
Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions
AMS Institute is a young and ambitious scientific institute located in Amsterdam. In this institute science, education, government, business partners and social organizations are working tightly together to create solutions for the complex challenges a metropole like Amsterdam is facing. The challenges are centred on applied technology in urban themes such as water, energy, waste, food, data and mobility, and the integration of these themes. Now and in the future. AMS Institute is positioned at a unique crossroad between fundamental sciences and the society-wide application of truly innovative solutions for metropolitan challenges. Bringing together the brightest minds in the field, our innovations have a state of the art research core and are tested and demonstrated in pilot projects and experiments throughout the city of Amsterdam as living lab. Moreover, all innovations are developed and tested together with local, national and international private and public partners, citizens and its future users within the city of Amsterdam.
The city of Amsterdam is in full support of AMS Institute. Besides a financial contribution, Amsterdam will share city data with AMS researchers, express city/citizen challenges, allow the use of Amsterdam as a testing and piloting place for AMS Institute, act as a launching customer for the solutions that AMS Institute creates, provide access to its people, networks and organizations, and support AMS Institute with its excellent brand name.
