The Energy Union aims at giving power to the consumers for managing the energy transition successfully and in a cost-effective way. More recently, the Clean Energy for All Europeans legislative package reinforced the central role of EU citizen addressing consumers' right, energy poverty and vulnerable consumers and introducing the concept of citizen energy communities, thus supporting the idea of an inclusive energy transition. The electricity sector is at the centre of the energy transition and Europe is looking at smart electricity grids as a key enabler for the proper integration of low-carbon energy solutions in a fully integrated energy market context. Over the last two decades, Europe recorded steady investments in smart grid research and innovation. However, EU research and innovation initiatives show limited attention to the needs of vulnerable consumers and to the wider societal aspects of energy poverty. This presentation will introduce results from the analysis of EU R&I projects and discuss some of the challenges on the path to an inclusive energy transition.
