This theme focuses on empowering designers to play a strategic role in shaping innovation strategies within networks of organisations, governments, businesses, public sectors, and non-profit organisations. Creating a positive societal impact and fostering inclusivity lie at the heart of these collaborations. You will dive into the dynamics, enablers, and barriers of mission-driven innovation; explore how design can influence policy making and drive systems change; learn to design for sustainable consumer behaviour; discover how marketing strategies can support responsible innovation; and embrace the power of systemic design to address the complex and strategic aspects of social and sustainable innovation.

In this course, students delve into the principles and practices of mission-driven innovation. They explore the strategic role of design in shaping mission-driven innovation and integrating design practices into policy-making for societal challenges. -
5 EC, Spring Semester - Q4
This course focuses on responsible marketing strategies that drive sustainable solutions. Students explore targeting strategies, sustainability/performance trade-offs, and the shift from green/sustainable to sufficiency marketing. -
5 EC, Fall Semester - Q2
This course focuses on empowering designers to create sustainable products, packaging, and services that align with a circular economy. It does so by addressing factors that foster positive consumer attitudes and exploring how to influence consumer behaviour towards greater sustainability. -
10 EC, Spring Semester - Q3 & Q4
This course immerses students in the entire process of strategic design for complex societal challenges. It covers topics like complexity and network theories, while teaching research methods and systemic design principles.
