Track: Heating and Cooling
All in all, across the world we need about 50% of our energy for heating and cooling. So, 50% of all the energy we use is on the one hand dispersed across the billions of buildings we have on the planet. These buildings have wide variety of characteristics, type of use and ownership. On the other hand, it also sits in complex industrial processes, which have specific requirements for the heat they need. For example, because they need to produce food or to process metals. So, when you let this sink in, it is quite an overwhelming and complex challenge to get rid of all the fossil-based heating and cooling we currently use. And that is exactly where this MSc SET track in Heating and Cooling comes into play! In this track we will provide you with a broad overview of challenges and solutions for the heat transition, ranging from individual house to collective systems and industry. Many solutions already exist to decarbonise heating and cooling. And one key element in decarbonising heat is that we need to make use of local sources of heat.
First year: theoretical basis and integration project
The first year comprises of theoretical study, assignments, and (virtual) laboratory work. Students gain a broad knowledge of the sustainable energy field and choose three out of the following eight profiles: Heat Sources, Heat in Buildings, Large-Scale Heat Systems, Digital Energy Technologies, Waste & Combined Heat and Power, Solar Energy, Power Engineering and Economics & Society, organised in pre-defined profile clusters. During Q2-3-4, the students work in groups on an integration project, to apply the technical knowledge they have acquired in a case study under realistic conditions.
Second year: electives and graduation
The second year is devoted to electives and the graduation project, which involves participating in an advanced research or design project in an academic or industrial environment in the Netherlands or abroad.
